Pair of French Mid Century Perforated Metal Sconces in the Style of Mathieu Matégot
A pair of 1970s ivory perforated metal wall sconces in the style of Mathieu Matégot. These sconces feature conical silhouettes with geometric perforations, allowing ambient light to shine through when illuminated. Created by folding a metal sheet, this piece employs a typical mid-century metal processing technique known as calendering—a metal bending method frequently used to create "shades" for lamps. This technique was widely utilized in many European furniture designs of the 1950s and 1960s, including the renowned Foglio sconces by Tobia and Afra Scarpa.
Mathieu Matégot was a French-Hungarian designer and upholsterer. He was born in 1910 in suburban Budapest, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1929. He traveled to the United States and Italy before settling in Paris. There he began working as a set designer and window dresser in department stores such as the Folies Bergère and Galerie Lafayette. After World War I, he founded his own studio and workshop, dedicated to the experimental creation of furniture and decorative objects. His designs are characterized by the extensive use of different materials, such as metal, glass, fabrics and leather. In 1959 Matégot abandoned furniture production to devote himself exclusively to the production of upholstery and tapestries, an activity he continued until 2001, the year of his death.
