Large Black Ceramic Vase by Bruno Bagnoli for Bitossi, Italy 1960s
A striking black ceramic vase created by Italian artist Bruno Bagnoli for Bitossi in the 1960s. This vase features a subtly scalloped rim and an elegant cylindrical shape adorned with intricate, abstract patterns that evoke a sense of movement and depth. The dark, earthy glaze enhances the carved design, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow. Signed on underside. Italy, 1960s.
Bruno Bagnoli (1914-1975) trained at the Porta Romana Art Institute in Florence and refined his ceramics skills in Montelupo Fiorentino, where he became known for his prestigious original models and decorations. His work was recognized with prizes in major competitions in Italy and abroad, including Arezzo, Florence, Faenza, and international exhibitions in cities such as Hamburg, Buenos Aires, and New York.
In 1954, at the Bitossi factory in Montelupo, he created the first pieces in salted stoneware, transitioning ceramics into a sculptural art form, akin to the works of Carlo Zauli and Guido Gambone. His sculptures, noted for their archaic and totemic inspiration, were acclaimed by Lara-Vinca Masini.
