Pair of ‘Sheriff’ Lounge Chairs + Ottoman in Natural Shearling by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil 1950s

$18,800.00

A pair of iconic ‘Sheriff’ lounge chairs and ottoman by renowned Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues. This chair design was originally created as a commission in 1957 for photographer Otto Stupakoff and gained little recognition until it won the first prize in the IV Concorso Internazionale del Mobile in Italy in 1961. It was subsequently manufactured in Italy for European consumption and became an icon of Brazilian modern design.

These chairs feature sculptural jacaranda wood frames with buckled leather strap sling understructures, a style and material typically associated with the Southern gaucho culture of the pampas. The cushions have been freshly reupholstered in ombre brown natural shearling fabric, which drape gracefully over the arms and evoke a laid back aesthetic. These chairs have a matching ottoman and belong in the permanent collection in the NY Museum of Modern Art. Maker’s mark present on frame. Brazil, 1950s.
