French Elm Expandable Dining Table in the Style of Pierre Chapo, 1970s
A 1970s dining table, channeling the spirit of Pierre Chapo’s iconic ‘T40’ design. Crafted from richly grained solid elm, its round top expands into a generous oval with the addition of two leaves and metal fasteners. The softly curved 'duck feet' add a sculptural presence, while the impeccable joinery speaks to Chapo’s mastery.
Pierre Chapo was a French architect and designer who was initially interested in painting. His encounter with a shipbuilding carpenter in 1947 introduced him to wood and woodworking, leading him to pursue architectural studies at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After traveling through Scandinavia and Central America and working for a year in the United States, he returned to Paris to focus on his interest in wood, crafting furniture primarily from solid oak, elm, ash, or teak, while maintaining a dual commitment to contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship.
