French Oak + Wrought Iron Coffee Table Attributed to René Prou, 1940s

$4,000.00

A 1940s French coffee or occasional table, attributed to René Prou—one of the defining figures of early 20th-century French decorative arts. The table pairs a round oak top with a richly patinated wrought iron base of lyrical form. Prou’s signature visual language is evident in the scroll and ring motifs that accent the base. The curving legs, forged with quiet rigor, culminate in a poised splay that balances ornament and structure.

René Prou (1889–1947), active during the Art Deco and postwar periods, was known for infusing industrial materials with a sense of grace and intimacy. This piece reflects his ability to bring a poetic quality to the utilitarian, rendering iron not as rigid support but as fluent gesture.

Prou was also a devoted pedagogue, teaching more than 3,000 students at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs over two decades—among them Charlotte Perriand and the postwar modernist designers Pierre Guariche and Alain Richard.
