German ‘Samurai’ Table Lamp with Paper Shade by Ingo Maurer

$2,800.00

The ‘Samurai’ table lamp was crafted by renowned German designer Ingo Maurer in the 1980s. Inspired by the organic forms of Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi, this striking piece is part of the iconic MaMo Nouchies series.

The hand-made paper shade, formed through a patented process that involves up to eight meticulous treatments, echoes the delicate art of Japanese textile dyeing. The sculptural shade, supported by a metal structure, emits a warm, diffused glow.

Ingo Maurer (1932–2019) was a visionary German industrial designer celebrated for his innovative and poetic approach to lighting. Often referred to as the “Poet of Light,” Maurer created sculptural, avant-garde lamps and lighting installations that challenged conventions and redefined the relationship between light and space.

Drawing inspiration from everyday objects, nature, and Japanese art, his iconic works—like the Bulb lamp (1966) and the MaMo Nouchies series—have been exhibited worldwide and remain highly sought-after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike.

DIMENSIONS: 30"W x 6"D x 29"H

ORIGIN: Germany

PERIOD: 1980s

MATERIALS: Paper,Metal

CONDITION: In good vintage condition, with light staining in one area. This lamp has been professionally rewired by our team of restorationists with a U.S. compatible transformer and inline switch.

To protect the paper shade, please note the following:
- Avoid exposure to damp environments; do not use the lamp in bathrooms, kitchens, or other areas prone to condensation.
- Avoid exposure to strong sunlight or drafts.
- Although the paper is a sensitive material, it can be gently extended if necessary. Do not overstretch it, as this will reduce its elasticity and prevent it from regaining its shape.
- Do not unfold the paper in the “wrong” direction (i.e., against the crease), as this will damage the fibers.
- In some cases, the shade may take time to assume its proper shape, as the paper needs to hang and relax for a while.
- Touching the surface may cause shallow dents—these can be removed by gently pushing them out from the opposite side with your fingers.
