Set of 6 ‘MR10’ Brown Leather Dining Chairs by Mies Van Der Rohe for Knoll, 1970s

$9,600.00

A Set of 6 ‘MR10’ dining chairs designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Gavina Knoll in the 1970s. The "MR10" is one of the most iconic furniture designs of the 20th Century, introduced for the first time in 1927 at the Die Wohnung exhibition in Stuttgart. These chairs feature polished chrome-plated tubular steel frames, with seats and backrests in high quality vegetable tanned brown saddle leather finished with hand-stitched details. The cantilevered structure allows the chair to flex slightly, providing a gentle, supportive give.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a pioneering German-American architect and one of the most influential figures in modern architecture. Born in 1886, in Aachen, Germany, Mies began his career as an apprentice in various design firms before eventually establishing his architectural practice. Mies is renowned for his minimalist architectural style, characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and an emphasis on materials like glass and steel. He coined the phrase "less is more," which became a guiding principle in modernist architecture.

Mies's work focused on creating harmonious, functional spaces that stripped away unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the structure and materials to speak for themselves. Mies also served as the director of the Bauhaus, the influential German design school, from 1930 until its closure in 1933. After emigrating to the United States, he became the head of the architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, where he further developed his architectural theories and influenced generations of architects.
