Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, and visual artist who became one of the most influential cultural figures of the 20th century. Known for his surrealist and avant-garde style, Cocteau's work spanned various forms of art, making him a versatile and multifaceted creator.

Cocteau was deeply embedded in the Parisian avant-garde scene and associated with leading figures such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Proust, and Igor Stravinsky. His artistic output ranged from poetry, with early collections like Le Cap de Bonne-Espérance (1919), to plays like Orphée (1926), where he explored the mythical and the mystical.
