Østervig later opened his first independent studio in the 1940s as a freelance furniture designer, working exclusively in modern design. In the following decades, he collaborated with many well known 20th Century Scandinavian furniture manufactures.

Østervig won awards at the Milan Triennale in both 1953 and 1960. One of Østervig’s designs was also selected for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in the 1960s. Østervig’s versatility within Danish furniture design earned him significant recognition.
