Carved Pear Wood + Mirrored Glass Bar Cabinet by Osvaldo Borsani, Italy 1930s

A stunning 1930s Italian bar cabinet designed by Osvaldo Borsani. This piece was constructed from bleached pear wood and stands on four rectangular legs with intricate hand carved fish and marine motifs. Two bi-fold doors feature rose hued mirrored squares with etched floral details and beautiful patinated brass hardware. The doors open to reveal a mirrored interior with tiled mirror accents. It has one glass shelf and three drawers with scalloped brass pulls. Unmarked. Italy, c.1936.

This piece is documented in Osvaldo Borsani by Gramigna and Irace, pg.140 as well as Il Mobile Italiano Degli Anni '40 e '50 by Guttry and Maino, pg. 110.

Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985) was an Italian designer and architect born into a family of fine furniture makers. He studied fine arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan before pursuing architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. In 1943, he designed his own house in Varedo, Villa Borsani which has since been preserved and acts as an archive of his work. In 1953, Borsani and his twin brother founded Tecno, a design research and technology center, which would go on to produce a range of iconic 20th century pieces. He was taken with the Modernist movement and collaborated with a range of avant-garde artists on interior and furniture design projects. Borsani died in 1985 in Milan and is considered one of the most innovative designers of the 20th Century.

DIMENSIONS: 53.5”W x 16.25”D x 48.25”H

CONDITION: Great vintage condition. Some missing mirrored tiles on the interior of the cabinet. Minor antiquing to the front cabinet, as well as the interior. Some scratches and dents to the top wooden surface of the cabinet. Minor chips to the carved wooden legs.
