John Behringer (1939–) is an industrial designer whose career ranges from product design to design education. Behringer earned his B.S. at the Parsons School of Design (NYU) in New York City and later taught industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1965, he established the first Design Office–or “think tank,” which utilized a form “alphabet” that dealt with form as a tool for functional exploration. Essentially he used a mathematical approach in developing forms first; which then are given speculative functions. Behringer has been awarded numerous design awards, including the selection of his Link bench for the permanent collection at MoMA.
