Rare Crystal Glass Mirror by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, Italy 1950s

$7,800.00

A 1950s Italian wall mirror attributed to Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte. This modernist piece features a concave crystal frame with curved edges in a striking blue hue. The frame supports a floating rectangular mirror, which is affixed to the frame with patinated brass demilune hardware. Unmarked. Hanging hardware is included. Sourced in Italy, 1950s.

This mirror was produced by Fontana Arte,  an iconic Italian lighting and design company founded in 1932 by Gio Ponti. The frame is crystal glass, which is made with minerals that gives the glass a highly prized transparency defined by the way it interacts with light. The glass appears almost liquid in its clarity, allowing light to pass through and creating beautiful reflections and refractions.

Expert glass blowers hand blow molten crystal glass, pour it into molds, hand cut and polish it.. a time and skill intensive process that is now practically endangered as a trade.

Documented: Franco Deboni, Fontana Arte: Gio Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, Umberto Allemandi & C., Torino, 2012, p. 61.
