French Ceramic Table Lamp by Pierre Casenove for Fondica

$4,400.00

A French ceramic table lamp by Pierre Casenove for Fondica, with a sculptural form and richly layered surface.

The elongated ceramic body is shaped with a gently swelling profile, its warm ochre ground animated by hand-worked lines, waves, and abstract markings. Bands of deep blue, charcoal, and terracotta punctuate the surface, creating a graphic rhythm against the earthy ceramic.

Executed using the sgraffito technique, the decoration is incised directly into the ceramic, allowing the underlying layers to emerge through the surface. The resulting marks feel both deliberate and spontaneous, emphasizing the handmade character of the piece while giving the lamp considerable visual depth.

A gilt metal neck and decorative finial rise above the ceramic body, paired with a simple linen shade that casts a warm, diffused light. Signed at the base, the piece reflects Pierre Casenove’s approach to functional objects as works of applied art.

About Pierre Casenove
Born in 1943 in Céret, France, Pierre Casenove is a leading figure in contemporary French ceramics. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself to ceramics early in his career, building his first kiln at the age of twenty.

For over four decades, from his studio in the Jura region, he has developed a distinctive practice that bridges art, design, and exceptional craftsmanship. Alongside collaborations with major glass, porcelain, lighting, and furniture companies, Casenove pursues a deeply personal approach to the unique ceramic object. His monumental stoneware works are defined by chamotte clay, restrained glazes, varied textures, and intentional imperfections.

Embracing cracks, irregularities, and traces of the firing process, he celebrates what he calls “the art of the imperfect object,” a philosophy that has earned his work international recognition.
