Italian Sage Mohair Three-Seat Sofa, 1930s
An Italian three-seat sofa from the 1930s, with pale mohair upholstery and a deeply channeled silhouette that gives its form a sculptural softness.
Sourced from a Modernist villa outside Milan, the sofa carries a sense of that setting in its proportions. A long, low back establishes a clear horizontal line, while rounded upholstered channels rise in a continuous rhythm across the back and wrap around both arms. Their gently domed edges create a scalloped outline, bringing movement to the sofa without additional ornament.
The mohair introduces a softer richness. Its soft blue-green hue shifts toward silvery gray where the light catches the pile, emphasizing the fullness of each channel and the shadows between them. Small gathers at the fronts of the arms reveal how the fabric follows the curves, giving the upholstery a finely tailored character.
Three generous seat cushions, each finished with piping, sit within the enclosing back and arms. Below, a plain upholstered apron balances the more expressive upper section, while short, dark cylindrical wood feet lift the body just off the floor. The exterior back is fully upholstered, allowing the sofa to be appreciated from across an open room.
Placed opposite a fireplace or used to anchor a living room seating arrangement, it brings both structure and a place to settle. Its particular appeal lies in the combination of villa provenance, luminous mohair, and a silhouette whose repeating curves remain compelling nearly a century later.
