Dutch Green 'Samara' Wall-Mounted Shelf by Derk Jan de Vries for Maisa, 1970s - 2 Available
A Dutch ‘Samara’ wall-mounted shelf designed by Derk Jan de Vries for Maisa in the 1970s, defined by its geometry, and deep green finish. The shelf takes the form of a long, shallow rectangular enclosure, with a continuous back panel, open front, and substantial vertical ends.
Its proportions are deliberately horizontal, creating a strong linear presence against the wall. The two end panels extend slightly beyond the interior surfaces, giving the composition a sense of depth and framing the open space without introducing unnecessary ornament.
The most distinctive feature is the treatment of the corners. Rather than relying on sharp, conventional edges, the outer ends are softly rounded, with carefully shaped transitions between the horizontal and vertical planes. These subtle curves soften the rigorous geometry. The construction remains visually straightforward, allowing the proportions and material to define the design.
Finished in a rich, dark green, the wood retains a visible grain that becomes especially apparent across the end panels and interior surfaces. Depending on the light, the color shifts between deep forest green and nearly black, introducing a quiet complexity to the monochromatic form. The finish emphasizes the natural texture of the wood rather than concealing it beneath a completely uniform surface.
The design reflects an important direction in Dutch furniture during the 1970s, when designers increasingly explored modular forms, simplified construction, and the relationship between furniture and architecture. De Vries approaches the shelf as a clearly defined volume rather than a conventional piece of storage, using the thickness of the wood, the open center, and the uninterrupted horizontal line to establish its character.
Its wall-mounted construction is particularly compelling. By keeping the floor entirely clear, the shelf appears to project directly from the wall, making it well suited to displaying books, ceramics, or a small collection of objects. The enclosed ends provide a natural frame for whatever is placed inside, while the dark green finish offers an alternative to more traditional wood tones.
