A bentwood dining chair designed by Josef Hoffmann + Oswald Haerdtl circa 1928 and produced by Thonet. These chairs were constructed with bent plywood and painted black. We are thrilled to have acquired so many! We can picture these beauties in a chic cafe or restaurant. ‘Originali dal 1880 Italcomma Pesaro’ Sticker on base of some of the chairs. Sourced in France, 1940s.

Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) was a founding member of the Vienna Secessionist movement along with Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser and others. He founded the prestigious Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) in 1903, which was a design-centered cooperative of artisans aimed to revive quality craftsmanship across a range of creative fields. The movement influenced the Art Deco + Bauhaus styles and was ultimately a pioneering force in modern design. Oswald Haerdtl was Hoffmann’s assistant and later studio director and partner. He studied under Josef Frank and Koloman Moser in Vienna and collaborated with Hoffmann on several projects.
