Dutch Oak + Braided Rope Lounge Chair by Bas Van Pelt, 1936
A rare Dutch lounge chair by interior architect and designer Bas van Pelt. Crafted for My Home Netherlands in 1936, this piece precedes the similar designs of Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet by nearly a decade. The chair features a gracefully curved frame of solid bent oak with fluid lines. The seat and backrest, in their original braided rope, are exceptionally preserved. Both visually striking and ergonomically thoughtful, its slightly tilted construction ensures comfort.
This iconic design is part of the permanent collection at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and is well-documented in design literature.
Bas van Pelt (1901–1975) was a Dutch interior architect and designer renowned for his innovative and functional approach to modern furniture design. He was active during the early-to-mid 20th century and played a significant role in shaping Dutch design in the 1930s and 1940s. Van Pelt's work is characterized by clean, fluid lines and an emphasis on the use of natural materials such as wood, often paired with woven or rope elements, creating designs that were both aesthetically refined and practical.
