Pair of Cherrywood + Rush Armchairs by Paolo Buffa, Italy 1950s
A rare pair of armchairs from Italian architect and designer Paolo Buffa in 1952. These beautifully crafted chairs are constructed of solid cherry wood and feature monumental carved frames with sculpted legs, windsor style wingbacks, and softly curved arms. The rush seats have been newly restored by our team of restorationists. Unmarked. Italy, 1950s.
Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was a Milanese designer and architect celebrated for his ability to blend traditional and contemporary styles. He is renowned for his luxurious lounge chairs and wingback chairs, as well as his striking modern tables, all crafted using classical techniques. Buffa, often collaborating with Antonio Cassi Ramelli, became a prominent figure in Italian
Mid-Century Modern design, creating furnishings for villas and residences across Italy.
His style combined elements of Art Deco, Rationalism, and neoclassicism, with a touch of whimsy. Buffa used high-quality materials and frequently partnered with local artisans like Serafino Arrighi and Marelli & Colico, known for their fine craftsmanship. While many of Buffa’s pieces are now prized by collectors, some of his designs, including those created with Angelo Marelli, are still in production by the Italian furniture manufacturer Eredi Marelli, which continues to produce items based on his archives.
