Finnish Brutalist Elm Dining Table Attributed to Olavi Hänninen, 1960s

$5,400.00

A Brutalist elm dining table attributed to Finnish designer Olavi Hänninen, 1960s. The thick rectangular top is carved from solid elm, its surface retaining a raw, organic edge that preserves the grain’s natural rhythm. Below, angled trestle legs are secured with dowel joinery and cross stretchers, a construction both elemental and architectural in stance.

Primitive yet commanding, its hand-hewn proportions ground the piece with material honesty.

Olavi Hänninen (1920–1992) was a Finnish designer and interior architect whose work spanned furniture, interiors, and industrial design. Before opening his own studio in 1961, he collaborated with architect Viljo Revell on projects such as the Palace Hotel in Helsinki, where he later designed interiors alongside Antti Nurmesniemi and Olli Borg. His output ranged from church silverware to trams, yet furniture remained central—marked by a distinctly modernist language rooted in material honesty.

Hänninen received international recognition, including a gold medal at the 11th Milan Triennale in 1957 and the State of Finland Award for Industrial Design in 1977. He was named an honorary member of the Finnish Association of Interior Architects, and his legacy was later documented in the 2006 volume Muovituolista raitiovaunuun.
