Italian Fruitwood Modular Desk or Table, 1970s

$4,000.00

An Italian fruitwood modular desk or table from the 1970s, built around a compact wooden frame and a surface that opens to reveal an unexpectedly considered interior.

The rectangular top is divided into two sections, each bordered by contrasting bands of grain. A deep reddish brown finish brings warmth to the spare outline, while slender square legs and low connecting stretchers establish a clear, open structure. Small curved brackets soften the junctions beneath the apron.

A hinged leaf folds outward from one section of the top, extending the surface and exposing a recessed storage compartment. Within, wooden dividers create a sequence of narrow slots, each finished with a semicircular cut-out for access. Smaller subdivisions introduce places for stationery and other essentials, making organization part of the design itself.

The compartment sits beneath one end of the table, its sloping side giving the rectangular composition an asymmetrical profile. Closed, the piece reads as a simple occasional work surface. Open, the relationship between the folding leaf, divided interior, and adjacent tabletop reveals its adaptable character.
