Dutch Green 'Samara' Oak Desk Chair by Derk Jan de Vries for Maisa, 1970s

$2,000.00

A Dutch ‘Samara’ oak desk chair designed by Derk Jan de Vries for Maisa in the 1970s, distinguished by its deep green finish.

The chair is constructed around a series of strong geometric lines, with four straight legs extending upward to form the armrests and back support. Broad, rectangular side frames create an open composition, their softened corners introducing a subtle contrast to the angular structure. The armrests rise gently toward the back, where they meet a curved wooden backrest that follows the natural contour of the body.

The backrest is particularly considered. Its shallow curve provides support while maintaining the chair’s clean, horizontal profile. The transition between the arms and back is smoothly resolved, giving the impression of a continuous form despite the distinct structural elements. A generously proportioned seat cushion, upholstered in muted gray fabric, introduces softness against the solid oak frame.

The deep forest-green finish allows the natural grain of the oak to remain visible, creating subtle variations in tone across the surface. This treatment gives the chair a distinctive character, emphasizing the relationship between the material's organic texture and the precision of its geometric construction.

De Vries's design reflects an approach to Dutch furniture in the 1970s that favored structural clarity and functional simplicity. Rather than relying on applied ornament, the chair finds expression through its proportions, exposed framework, and carefully shaped wood. Its open sides and backrest give it a lightness that balances the substantial character of the oak.

Designed as part of the Samara collection, the chair pairs naturally with the corresponding desk, sharing its geometric language and distinctive finish. Equally compelling on its own, it offers the comfort of an upholstered seat within a sculptural frame, making it well suited to a study, bedroom, or living space where its form can be appreciated from every angle.

About Derk Jan de Vries
Derk Jan de Vries (1917–1991) was a Dutch furniture designer known for his architectural approach to modern furniture, combining geometric precision, functional simplicity, and refined craftsmanship. Born in Obergum, the Netherlands, de Vries developed a design sensibility rooted in Dutch modernism before establishing a presence in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. He is particularly recognized for his collaboration with Italian manufacturer Maisa di Seveso, for whom he developed the Samara collection in the late 1970s.

Encompassing desks, seating, tables, and modular storage, the collection is distinguished by its clean lines, carefully balanced proportions, and expressive use of solid wood. Subtly rounded corners, integrated handles, and thoughtful joinery reflect his attention to both material and construction. His work brings together the structural clarity of Dutch design with the warmth and craftsmanship of Italian furniture making, resulting in pieces that remain both practical and sculptural.
