Italian Modular Bookcase by Roberto Pamio & Renato Toso for Stilwood, 1972

$14,000.00

A rare Italian modular bookcase and room divider designed by Roberto Pamio and Renato Toso for Stilwood in 1972.

Constructed as two independent modules, the bookcase pairs warm blonde wood with white laminate panels. Each module is organized around an open grid of horizontal shelves and vertical dividers, enclosed by a broad rectangular frame with softly rounded interior corners.

Placed together, the two sections form an expansive architectural composition measuring just over seven feet wide. From the front, the shelving reads almost as a graphic grid; viewed from an angle, its considerable depth and intersecting planes become more apparent.

The modular construction is one of the design's most useful features. The two sections can be positioned together as a single bookcase or separated and used individually, allowing the piece to adapt to different interiors. Finished on both sides, it can also stand freely within a room as a divider rather than being limited to placement against a wall.

Roberto Pamio and Renato Toso approached furniture with the eye of architects. Pamio studied architecture in Venice under figures including Carlo Scarpa, Ignazio Gardella and Giuseppe Samonà, and the pair went on to work across furniture, lighting and glass. Their designs for Stilwood during the late 1960s and 1970s frequently explored modularity and the relationship between furniture and the surrounding interior.

This bookcase is documented in the original Stilwood catalog and was published in Casa Vogue, no. 14, June 1972, p. 71, with a further Stilwood advertisement appearing in Casa Vogue, no. 20, April 1973.
