French Empire-Style Walnut + Travertine Top Desk, 1940s

$12,000.00

A French Empire-style walnut desk from the 1940s, defined by a pale travertine top and two sculptural supports with sweeping curves. The rectangular stone surface has a quiet, finely mottled appearance, its creamy tone contrasting with the deep brown walnut beneath.

A straight edge and slight overhang establish a clear horizontal line, balancing the movement of the base and offering a broad surface for writing, reading, or arranging a few chosen objects.

At either end, a substantial wooden support forms a deep U-shaped opening, rising into tightly curled scrolls beneath the top. Viewed from the side, these elements suggest the outline of a lyre. Their open centers allow light to pass through, giving the desk a sense of space despite the considerable depth of the wood.

Golden-toned carved leaves follow the outer curves, meeting in small paired scrolls near the base. Fine contrasting moldings trace the silhouette, emphasizing each turn against the walnut grain. Broad shaped feet finish in outward curls, carrying the same decorative rhythm down to the floor.

In a study, the desk creates a composed setting for work. Positioned within a room, its ornamented end supports remain visible, allowing the base to become part of the interior’s arrangement.
