Italian Wall Mirror Attributed to Luigi Fontana for Fontana Arte, 1940s
An Italian glass wall mirror attributed to Luigi Fontana for Fontana Arte from the 1940s, distinguished by its tapered silhouette, pale green mirrored glass, and gilt detailing.
The mirror is composed of two distinct layers, creating a composition that feels both decorative and carefully structured. At its center, a tall rectangular mirror with softly rounded corners is enclosed by a slender gilt frame. Surrounding it is a larger panel of green-tinted mirrored glass, its irregular perimeter introducing a more expressive quality.
The outer glass has gently undulating sides that narrow toward the middle before widening at the top and bottom, where shallow curves and small angular points create an almost ornamental silhouette. The pale green surface brings a subtle wash of color to the wall, shifting between soft mint and deeper emerald tones depending on the light and viewing angle.
Four substantial gilt elements extend diagonally from the corners of the central frame, visually connecting the two layers. Their rounded, tubular forms introduce a strong detail, contrasting with the delicacy of the glass.
The mirror reflects the sophisticated material experimentation associated with Italian decorative arts during the 1940s, particularly the work of Fontana Arte. Established in 1932, the company became known for treating glass as an architectural and decorative material, exploring its relationship with metal, reflection, and light. The attribution to Luigi Fontana places this piece within that tradition, where traditional craftsmanship and modern design were brought together through carefully considered proportions and luxurious materials.
What makes this mirror especially interesting is the relationship between its two reflective surfaces. The central mirror remains clear and functional, while the surrounding green glass acts almost as a frame, catching light and reflecting its surroundings with a different color and intensity. The layered construction gives the piece dimension, allowing it to read as more than a conventional wall mirror.
