Italian Walnut Console with Parchment Finish Top, 1970s
An Italian walnut console from the 1970s, pairing a pale parchment finish top with a sweeping curved base, the rectangular top establishes a strong horizontal line, its cream and warm beige tones softly mottled across the surface. A fine central seam divides the finish into two sections, while a deep walnut apron beneath introduces richly figured grain and a darker border.
The base descends from either side in a broad U-shaped curve, leaving a generous opening beneath the top. Walnut grain follows the curved surfaces, moving through honey brown and deeper chestnut tones. The substantial support feels lightened by the space it surrounds, allowing the wall behind to become part of the composition.
At the lowest point of the curve, a small wooden sphere rests on a square platform, a distinctive detail that punctuates the continuous form. Below, a wide plinth with rounded ends and an arched central opening grounds the console, repeating the softened geometry above.
In an entry, beneath a mirror, or along a living room wall, the console offers a display surface with enough character to hold its own when left spare.
