Italian White Opaline Glass Disc Chandelier Attributed to Gino Vistosi, 1960s

Composed of overlapping circular glass elements that create an arrangement of light, transparency, and reflection, an Italian white opaline glass disc chandelier attributed to Gino Vistosi from the 1960s.

The chandelier is built around a central metal structure, from which numerous circular glass discs extend outward at varying heights and angles. Each disc features a softly rounded white opaline center surrounded by a broad, transparent glass border, allowing the opaque centers to appear to float within the clear material.

Rather than following the traditional structure of a chandelier with arms and shades, the composition develops through repetition. The discs are arranged in staggered tiers, overlapping one another to form a rounded, almost cloud-like volume. From the front, they read as a collection of luminous circles; from the side, their thin profiles reveal the openness of the construction. Small circular metal fasteners secure each element to slender supporting arms, introducing a precise, functional detail against the softness of the glass.

The treatment of the glass is central to the design. The opaline centers diffuse light into a gentle, even glow, while the transparent borders catch reflections and allow light to pass between the individual discs. When illuminated, the chandelier becomes a layered composition of bright white surfaces, delicate glass edges, and warm reflections from the metal structure. Even when unlit, the interplay between clear and opaque glass gives the fixture a compelling visual presence.

The attribution to Gino Vistosi connects the chandelier to an important period of experimentation in Italian glassmaking. Working within the Murano glass tradition, Vistosi helped advance a modern approach to lighting that emphasized the sculptural possibilities of glass. During the 1960s, designers increasingly moved away from elaborate traditional forms, exploring modular arrangements, geometric shapes, and the relationship between transparency and illumination. This chandelier reflects that spirit, using a single circular element repeated throughout the composition to create something far more complex.

Suspended above a dining table, in an entryway, or within a living space, the chandelier introduces a strong sculptural element without overwhelming its surroundings. Its appearance also changes considerably depending on the viewing angle, making it as engaging from the side as it is from directly beneath.
