Barbara Hahn by Peter M. Bauer, 1971

A figurative mixed media painting on canvas created by Bavarian artist Peter M. Bauer in 1971. This piece has beautiful textural details and exemplifies Bauer’s signature style. It is presented in a white wood frame and depicts a person in vibrant orange, red and green hues. Sourced in France.

Peter M. Bauer (1946-2020) was a multimedia artist born in Wolnzach, Bavaria. He began his artistic pursuits as a teenager, making ceramics and studying under famous ceramicists in Stuttgart until 1967. He then began to experiment with batiks, linocuts, metal casts, masks and woolen tapestries, which led him into painting. From 1967 on, he devoted himself exclusively to painting with a focus on figurative paintings.

The theme’s of Bauer’s works reflect his humorous interpretation of his experiences. He believed objects traditionally considered irrelevant, held informative value as an experience. His paintings are characterized by a simplification and reduction of forms, which lead the viewer to understand Bauer’s own experience with the subject. In 1991 he moved to Brazil after falling in love with the town of Olinda on vacation years prior. He died in Olinda in 2020 at the age of 74.
