19th Century French Woodland Tapestry with Peacocks

$6,200.00

A late 19th-century French tapestry, hand-woven in wool and later backed in cotton, composed in a warm palette of sepia, umber, and burnt gold. The scene is lush and dreamlike: a pair of peacocks nestled among wild grasses and oversized foliage, their forms softly echoed by the curling ferns and blooming undergrowth that surrounds them.

Beyond the forest edge, a distant manor emerges—partially obscured by trees, it hints at a world just out of reach, a romantic vision of life lived at the intersection of wilderness and refinement. The border blooms with scrolling acanthus, fruit, and flora, rendered with such sculptural density they seem to spill beyond the frame.

Earthy, theatrical, and intricately textured, this textile captures the pastoral imagination of Belle Époque France. Mural in spirit but easier to place—measuring 47.5 inches across—it serves as both statement and softness, anchoring a wall with warmth, depth, and quiet grandeur.
