20th Century French Ceramic Vase by Marie-Madeleine Jolly

$2,300.00

A Mid 20th century ceramic vase by Marie-Madeleine Jolly, created during her years working in Vallauris in the 1950s–60s. Rising to a slender, elongated neck with a gently flared lip, the vase is balanced by a rounded body and a refined vertical handle that accentuates its silhouette.

The surface is animated with stylized peacock feather motifs, their rhythmic, eye-like forms fanning across the body in layered tones of deep teal, charcoal, and soft aqua. Fine linear detailing lends movement and depth, while the glaze pools subtly within the incised decoration, heightening the interplay of texture and color.

Both sculptural and functional, the piece reflects Jolly’s expressive approach to form and ornament, an aesthetic shaped within the creative milieu of Vallauris and informed by her close collaborations with Jean Cocteau, for whom she produced editions of his ceramics between 1957 and 1963. Signed “M M Jolly” along the underside.
