3-Piece Spanish Brass Carving Set by David Marshall, 1970s

$780.00

A 1970s carving set by David Marshall, produced in Spain. Three pieces—a carving fork and two knives—each defined by his cast brass handles, formed in a segmented, bamboo-like rhythm.

The blades shift in profile: one long and pointed, the other broader with a serrated edge, accompanied by a two-pronged fork. Functional variation, held together by a consistent, sculptural line.

The brass carries a naturally developed patina, mottled and uneven, emphasizing the hand-cast process. Together, the set reads as a single composition—weighty, warm, and quietly graphic—equally suited to use or display.

Scottish metal artist David Marshall (b. 1942) traded a traditional life for a life on the road—riding a motorbike from Canada through Central America to Colombia, where he learned to weld in the mountains above Bogotá, and finding inspiration across all of Europe as he traveled the world in the 1960s, 70s, and beyond.

For the last five decades he has cast bronze and aluminium sculptures from his remote farm studio in the Andalucian countryside of Southern Spain. His coffee tables, wall panels, and objets are inspired by granite outcrops of the Scottish Highlands, the stone geometry of Roman ruins, and the lattice patterns of Moorish Spain.

Marshall has amassed a following that spans the globe, from commissions with Christian Dior to public art exhibitions in Europe. Each piece marries real world functionality with the curiosity of a seasoned traveler.
