Belgian Art Deco Copper + Saint-Gobain Glass Console by Rosel, 1930s
The materials are what first draw you to this Art Deco console, but the maker's stamp gives us an even better understanding of its history. The piece is stamped ROSEL, connecting it to the Brussels furniture maker active from the late 19th century through at least the 1930s.
Made in the 1930s, the console pairs a substantial one-inch-thick Saint-Gobain glass top with sweeping copper supports and a warm wood base. The copper is formed into two continuous bands, curling inward at the base and again beneath the top. Above, the textured glass has a subtle green cast along its edges, with its considerable thickness becoming part of the design.
Rosel had a long history in Brussels, exhibiting furniture internationally by the 1890s and later operating as Ateliers Rosel. By 1937, period publications were documenting interiors designed by Charles Rosel and executed by the firm's Brussels workshops, placing Rosel firmly within the world of Belgian decorative arts at the time this console was made.
The glass is by Saint-Gobain, the historic French glassmaker with operations in Brussels. Its remarkable thickness and softly textured surface feel especially at home against the warmth of the copper and wood.
At just under three feet wide, the console is an easy piece to place in an entryway, living room, or alongside a dining area.
