A Belgian lounge chair from the 1970s, attributed to Erik Deforce for H-Plan, where generous proportions and honest materials come together in a distinctly architectural expression of comfort.

The silhouette is low and composed. Thick pine forms a structural frame, its softened edges and exposed joinery giving the chair a sense of permanence rather than ornament. Circular timber plugs punctuate the construction, celebrating the craftsmanship instead of concealing it.

Suspended within the frame, supple cognac leather cushions create a contrast to the solidity of the wood. The cylindrical headrest, deep seat, and broad back invite a relaxed posture, while the natural patina of the leather lends warmth and character that only improves with time.

Erik Deforce (1937–2012) was a Belgian designer, interior architect, painter, and ceramic sculptor whose multidisciplinary career spanned modern furniture design and the fine arts. After studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai, he co-founded the influential SAGA Design Center in Ostend in the early 1960s, introducing Italian and Scandinavian modernism to Belgium while developing his own distinctive furniture designs. His international breakthrough came with the G-Collection, unveiled at the 1970 Interieur Biennale in Kortrijk and produced by Gervan. Sculptural and ergonomically driven pieces such as the Lord chaise longue, Viterbo, Hilton, and President have since become icons of Belgian modern design, admired for their bold forms and limited production.

From the mid-1970s onward, Deforce increasingly focused on painting and ceramic sculpture, creating a deeply personal body of work inspired by mythology, symbolism, and the subconscious. Influenced by Paul Klee and Belgian artist Yves Rhayé, his paintings and ceramics feature organic, anthropomorphic forms and richly layered glazes that explore themes of fertility, human existence, and the natural world. Over the course of his career, Deforce created nearly 200 furniture designs alongside hundreds of paintings and ceramic sculptures, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate in both twentieth-century design and contemporary Belgian art.
