Brazilian ‘Sheriff’ Leather Lounge Chair with Tan Straps by Sergio Rodrigues, 1957

$8,800.00

An iconic ‘Sheriff’ lounge chair by renowned Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues. This chair design was originally created as a commission in 1957 for photographer Otto Stupakoff and gained little recognition until it won the first prize in the IV Concorso Internazionale del Mobile in Italy in 1961. It was subsequently manufactured in Italy for European consumption and became an icon of Brazilian modern design.

This chair features a sculptural jacaranda wood frame with a buckled leather strap sling understructure, a style and material typically associated with the Southern gaucho culture of the pampas. The cushions retain their original cognac leather upholstery, which drape gracefully over the arms and evoke a laid back aesthetic. This chair belongs in the permanent collection in the NY Museum of Modern Art. Maker’s mark present on frame.
