French Art Nouveau Hand-Painted Wood Pedestal, 1960s

$1,900.00

A French pedestal from the 1970s, where the language of Art Nouveau is carried forward through hand and surface.

The structure is architectural in miniature, a rising column set on a stepped base, tapering upward to a modest platform. Its proportions are deliberate, designed to elevate rather than dominate, giving presence to whatever rests above it. A vase, a sculpture, a single object, each becomes part of a composed vertical moment.

Hand-painted throughout, the surface carries a softness that offsets the geometry. Pale tones of ivory and muted green form the ground, overlaid with fluid, botanical motifs that move gently across each face. The lines are not rigidly symmetrical; they feel drawn rather than applied, echoing the Art Nouveau inclination toward organic movement and natural form.

Time is visible in the finish. Edges soften, paint settles into the grain, and subtle variations emerge across the surface, giving the piece a lived-in quietness rather than decorative insistence. It reads as something preserved rather than perfected.

Placed within a room, it acts as both support and gesture. Along a wall, in a corner, or beside a seating area, it introduces height and rhythm, less a stand alone object than a way of lifting attention, guiding the eye upward, and shaping how the space is experienced.
