French Carved Oak + Cherry Cabinet, 1940s

$18,000.00

From across the room, it’s the contrast of woods that first draws you to this French cabinet. Sourced in Paris and dating to the 1940s, broad cherry doors sit within a pale oak frame. It’s only as you get closer that the extraordinary amount of hand-carved detail begins to reveal itself.

A pair of female figures has been carved into the oak surround, one on either side of the doors. Their draped clothing falls nearly the full length of the frame, with individual folds, hands, faces, and even curls of hair worked into the wood. Stylized birds appear above them, while fluted columns continue beneath their feet. The carving carries all the way down to the legs, making the entire front feel almost like an architectural façade.

At the center are two turquoise-glazed ceramic pulls set into brass surrounds, each molded with an aquatic motif. Against the warmth of the cherry, that small flash of turquoise is completely unexpected—and exactly the kind of detail that makes you wonder about the person who made this and the room it was originally intended for.

Opening the doors reveals another layer. The interior is fitted with shelves, two shallow drawers, and slatted storage below, divided into compartments that make the cabinet as functional as it is unusual. One key accompanies the piece.

At five and a half feet tall and just over five feet wide, there’s enough scale for the carvings to read from across a room, but this is really a piece made for looking closely. The more time you spend with it, the more you find: the grain of the contrasting woods, the carved birds overhead, the folds of a dress, the tiny fingers of a hand, the flash of turquoise at the center.

It’s hard to imagine another quite like it.
