French Ceramic Champagne Chiller by Jean Austry, 1960s

$450.00

A French ceramic champagne chiller by Jean Austry from the 1960s.

Wide at the rim and tapering gently toward the base, the vessel carries a softened architectural silhouette, interrupted only by two cut-out handles that feel carved rather than applied. Finished in a deep smoked glaze, the surface shifts between warm umber and charcoal tones, catching light unevenly and revealing the hand of the maker beneath the firing.

Designed to hold champagne at the table, the piece moves easily beyond its original function. Empty, it reads as an object of pure form. Filled with ice and bottles, it becomes part of the ritual of gathering.

There is a particular sensibility to French ceramics of this period: functional objects elevated through proportion, material, and finish. Austry’s work reflects that balance. The subtle irregularities in the glaze, the softened edges, the weight of the clay itself all contribute to an object that feels grounded and enduring.
