French Ceramic Coffee Table by Raymond Corroyez, 1960s

$4,500.00

A French ceramic coffee table by Raymond Corroyez from the 1960s, where bold graphic composition is balanced by the restraint of modernist form.

Raised on a slender black steel frame, the table possesses a light architectural presence that allows the ceramic surface to take center stage. Across a field of richly glazed blue tiles, an intricate symmetrical motif unfolds in earthy ochres, deep browns, vivid reds, and soft whites. The hand-formed composition recalls the organic geometry found throughout Corroyez's ceramic work, with each glazed element revealing subtle tonal variation and texture that speak to the individuality of the firing process.

Created during the flourishing of French ceramic design in the 1960s, bearing Corroyez's signature—marked R. Corroyez—the table reflects Raymond Corroyez's ability to merge sculptural decoration with everyday function. Rather than treating the ceramic top as a simple surface, he transformed it into a carefully balanced composition, where color, relief, and pattern create visual depth from every angle.

Raymond Corroyez (1925–2017) was a French architect, ceramist, and artist from the Nord region whose work became closely associated with the flourishing French ceramic movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Best known for his Mid-Century Modern furniture—particularly his sculptural coffee tables composed of hand-glazed ceramic tiles—Corroyez brought together the disciplines of architecture, ceramics, and design in works that blurred the line between functional furniture and fine art.

Working primarily in stoneware and glazed ceramics, Corroyez created richly textured surfaces inspired by nature, abstraction, and modernist architecture. Each tile was individually modeled and fired before being assembled into simple wooden frames, emphasizing the handmade character of every piece. His work reflects the era's renewed appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship and sculptural form, and today his ceramic tables remain prized examples of mid-century French design.
