French Ceramic Table Lamp with Textured Shade by Georges Pelletier, 1960s

$3,900.00

A sculptural French ceramic table lamp by Georges Pelletier, created during the 1960s, where craftsmanship, material, and form come together with confidence.

The rounded ceramic base is hand-thrown and richly glazed in deep cobalt and earthy ochre tones, layered with incised bands and applied circular details that reflect Pelletier's unmistakable approach to decorative ceramics. The surface carries subtle variations in color and texture, revealing the hand of the maker and the expressive nature of the firing process.

Above, a woven wool shade introduces an unexpected softness. Richly textured with boucle elements and woven bands of burgundy, cream, and muted gray, it transforms the lamp into something that feels as much like textile art as functional lighting.

When illuminated, the woven shade gently diffuses the light, casting a warm glow that emphasizes the depth of its texture while complementing the earthy character of the ceramic below. On a bedside table, console, or bookshelf, it brings atmosphere as much as illumination.

Georges Pelletier, born in 1938 in Brussels, is a renowned ceramist based in Cannes, France. He began his ceramic journey in 1953 at the Pioulier School in Vence, later studying at the Académie Charpentier and the École des Arts et Métiers in Paris, and honing his skills at the Poteries d’Accolay. Influenced by the vibrant Parisian art scene, he frequently visited Fernand Léger’s studio.

In the early 1960s, Pelletier opened his first ceramic studio in Paris, where his distinctive work caught the attention of Maison Bobois, sparking a successful collaboration from 1961 to 1973. Since then, he has worked in Cannes, creating his signature solar motif ceramics alongside his son.
