French Cerused Oak Cabinet Attributed to Francisque Chaleyssin, 1940s

$24,000.00

A 1940s French cerused oak cabinet attributed to Francisque Chaleyssin, the influential Lyonnaise cabinetmaker known for his refined, architectural forms. Generous in scale and sculptural in detail, the cabinet features deeply carved, undulating borders and rests on a stepped plinth base adorned with geometric rings and sweeping lines.

Twin glass-fronted doors with inset brass pulls open to reveal adjustable shelving. The cerused finish accentuates the oak’s grain—adding a sense of rhythm, depth, and movement. A refined yet expressive piece, emblematic of mid-century French craftsmanship.

Francisque Chaleyssin (1872–1951) was a French cabinetmaker based in Lyon, renowned for his contributions during the Art Deco and early modernist periods. The Chaleyssin Company was originally founded by his father, and in 1896, he and his brother took over the business, with Francisque taking the lead as its creative force. Francisque began producing replicas of antique furniture, showcasing his skilled craftsmanship. By 1912, the company adopted the name Mercier & Chaleyssin.

Francisque's work often featured intricate carved details, luxurious materials such as oak and exotic woods, and decorative elements that emphasized the natural grain or texture of the materials.
