French Chestnut Leather + Oak Lounge Chair, 1960s - 4 Available
A French lounge chair from the 1960s, with a substantial oak frame and warm cognac leather cushions that soften its broad, deliberate structure.
Thick wooden members define the silhouette, from the wide, flat armrests to the shaped uprights and rounded feet. Pronounced grain runs across the frame, with knots, lighter worn edges, and variations in tone giving the oak a tactile presence. Projecting rail ends and visible pegs bring the construction into view, making the connections part of the design.
The back leans gently away from the seat, framed by curved sides that rise beside the cushion like shallow wings. Two leather-covered buttons draw the back cushion inward, creating radiating folds across its surface. A deep seat cushion balances the height above, with stitched edges giving both cushions a clear outline.
The leather ranges from golden caramel to deeper brown, with creasing, fine surface wear, and pale scuffing most apparent across the seat. These variations sit naturally alongside the textured oak, giving the chair a relaxed, lived-in character. From behind, broad horizontal rails hold the composition together, allowing the piece to stand freely within a room.
Beside a fireplace or reading lamp, it establishes a grounded place to settle. In a living room, its open sides and exposed frame bring definition among softer upholstered pieces.
Sold and priced individually.
