French Folk Art Carved Wood Cabinet, 1940s
Made in the 1940s, this French cabinet has the kind of hand-worked details that make folk furniture so appealing, particularly the deeply carved, wavy uprights that run from top to bottom and continue into the feet.
The front is framed by layers of molded wood, with simple incised diamond motifs carved into the cabinet door and side panels. Even the round wooden pulls have been shaped with concentric rings. These details feel individual rather than perfectly uniform, with small variations that reveal the maker’s hand throughout.
A shallow drawer sits above a single cabinet door, which opens to an interior shelf. At just under 20 inches wide, its petite proportions make it especially easy to place beside a bed or sofa, or anywhere a little extra storage is needed.
