French Geometric Ceramic Table Lamp, 1950s - 2 Available

$2,200.00

A French ceramic table lamp from the 1950s, built around a geometric form that gives the weight and texture of studio pottery to a functional object. The substantial ceramic base takes the shape of a softened rectangle, its broad faces divided into a grid of raised square panels. Within each is a circular medallion worked with intricate floral and foliate motifs.

The repetition creates a strong architectural rhythm, while slight variations from one impression to the next keep the surface from feeling mechanical. The decoration continues around the sides, making the lamp particularly compelling when viewed from different angles.

Its glaze is central to the piece. Cream, sand, ochre, and deep rust move unevenly across the ceramic, settling more heavily into the recessed decoration and bringing the relief into focus. Areas of mottling, pooling, and tonal variation reveal the nature of the firing process, giving the surface a depth that a uniform factory finish could not achieve.

There is an interesting tension between the lamp’s two visual languages. The squared body and orderly grid feel distinctly modern, while the embossed medallions recall carved ornament and traditional ceramic decoration.

A short, hand-shaped ceramic neck rises directly from the body, preserving the sense that the base has been formed as a single object. Paired with the broad dark shade, the proportions become especially graphic: a low, substantial ceramic volume beneath a clean horizontal plane.

Sold and priced individually.
