French Gilt Bronze Candelabra by Pierre Casenove for Fondica, 1980s - 3 Available
A French gilt bronze candelabra designed by Pierre Casenove for Fondica in the 1980s, where functional object meets artistic expression.
Cast in gilt bronze, the form is composed as a vertical sequence of textured and symbolic elements, rising from a broad, organic base to a single candle holder above. A spiral motif anchors the composition, balanced by a sunburst medallion and hammered surfaces that catch and scatter light from every angle. The finish carries the warmth and irregularity of hand-worked bronze, giving the piece a sense of movement even when unlit.
Whether placed on a dining table, console, or mantel, it brings a presence that extends beyond its purpose as a candle holder. By day, it reads as an object of art. By candlelight, its textured surface comes alive, casting warmth and shadow across the room.
Born in 1943 in Céret, France, Pierre Casenove is a leading figure in contemporary French ceramics. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself to ceramics early in his career, building his first kiln at the age of twenty. For over four decades, from his studio in the Jura region, he has developed a distinctive practice that bridges art, design, and exceptional craftsmanship.
Alongside collaborations with major glass, porcelain, lighting, and furniture companies, Casenove pursues a deeply personal approach to the unique ceramic object. His monumental stoneware works are defined by chamotte clay, restrained glazes, varied textures, and intentional imperfections. Embracing cracks, irregularities, and traces of the firing process, he celebrates what he calls “the art of the imperfect object,” a philosophy that has earned his work international recognition.
