French Gilt Iron + Églomisé Mirrored Coffee Table in the Manner of René Prou, 1940s
Sourced in Paris, this 1940s French coffee table has the fluid lines associated with the work of René Prou. The gilt iron frame is shaped almost entirely through curves, from the gently bowed legs to the slender stretchers that cross beneath the table.
The églomisé mirrored top is particularly special. Its softly shaped corners follow the outline of the frame, while a hand-worked diamond pattern and double border run across the aged mirrored surface. Decades of oxidation and variation have given the mirror a mottled, silvery appearance, with no two areas quite the same.
Traces of the original gilt finish remain throughout the iron, revealing warmer reddish tones beneath and emphasizing the curves of the frame. Small curled feet finish each leg, another detail that rewards a closer look.
At three feet wide, the table has a relatively petite footprint that makes it easy to place in front of a sofa or between a pair of lounge chairs.
