French Glazed Ceramic Tile Wall Panel, 1960s
A French glazed ceramic tile wall panel from the 1960s, sourced in the South of France. Composed of individual glazed ceramic tiles mounted to a wood panel, the scene centers on two nude figures surrounded by amphora-like vessels.
One sits before a pedestal, carefully working on or examining a decorated vase, while the second moves between a row of vessels and a large urn displayed on an easel. Across the upper edge, repeated sunbursts create a frieze-like border, reinforcing the quality of the composition.
The imagery draws from a distinctly Mediterranean vocabulary. Snakes, plants, a spider, scorpion, lizard and other small symbols appear within the painted vessels, while black linear decoration recalls the graphic language of ancient ceramics. A palette of cream, ochre, mottled gray and a vivid turquoise border gives the panel depth without distracting from the drawing.
Extensive craquelure moves across the glazed surface of each tile, becoming part of the character of the work. Against the densely mottled gray ground, the fine network of lines gives the panel an aged, almost archaeological quality. Individual tile divisions remain visible throughout, creating a subtle grid beneath the continuous scene.
An unidentified JMG monogram appears within the composition, incorporated into a diamond-shaped motif rather than treated as a conventional signature.
