French Hand-Forged Iron Coffee Table, 1960s

$4,400.00

Dating to the 1960s, this French table in hand-forged iron is a study in movement and ornament. The base is composed of intricately worked iron, each element shaped by hand into a series of continuous scrolls and looping forms.

These gestures are not merely decorative; they create a sense of lift and circulation, allowing the structure to feel open despite its density. The iron twists and turns with a fluidity that suggests drawing in space, lines extended and returned in deliberate cadence.

There is no strict symmetry, but rather a balanced irregularity. Each curve responds to the next, building a composition that feels animated, almost calligraphic. The craftsmanship remains visible throughout, with subtle variations in thickness and curvature revealing the immediacy of the forging process.

The surface carries a verdigris blue-green patina, softening the strength of the iron with a layered, atmospheric finish. Tones shift between oxidized blue, green, and hints of underlying warmth, giving the piece a sense of age and quiet transformation. This patina is not applied for effect alone; it emerges as part of the material’s life, a record of exposure and time.

Resting above is a custom fabricated circular mirror glass top. Its reflective surface introduces stillness to the composition, contrasting the movement of the base below. Light is gathered and dispersed across the plane, echoing fragments of the ironwork while adding a sense of clarity and depth.

Placed within a space, the table reads as both functional object and sculptural presence. It does not depend on mass for impact, but on line, movement, and the subtle luminosity of its patinated surface.
