French Iron + Slate Coffee Table by René Drouet, 1940s
Dating to the 1940s, a French coffee table by René Drouet, crafted from sculptural ironwork and paired with the weight of a slate top.
The form is low and deliberate, with an expressive wrought iron base defined by sweeping curves, circular motifs, and elongated lines that give the structure a sense of movement. The iron appears almost drawn in space, creating an intricate silhouette while maintaining an openness beneath the top.
A broad slate surface provides a strong counterpoint to the animated base. Its dark, matte character brings a sense of restraint to the composition, allowing the ironwork to remain the visual focus.
The quality of the base makes the table equally effective viewed from above or at eye level. Its open construction allows light and shadow to move through the ironwork, giving the piece a changing presence throughout the day.
About René Drouet
Trained at the École Boulle, René Drouet (1899–1993) apprenticed under Maurice Dufrène at Galeries Lafayette before joining DIM (Décoration Intérieure Mobilier) and later Jean Domin’s studio. His formation instilled both technical mastery and an eye for refinement, allowing him to create complete interiors as well as singular works.
A true devotee of Art Deco, he carried the style forward with French Forties flair, notably designing the Parc Monceau apartment for actor Charles Boyer and Pat Paterson.
