French Limestone Table Lamp by Albert Tormos, 1970s

$2,800.00

A French table lamp by Albert Tormos from the 1970s, shaped from limestone, the substantial stone base is composed of softly irregular, stacked forms, with each section retaining the tactile surface and natural variation of the limestone.

The openings between the forms introduce a sense of lightness to the structure, allowing the material to read as both solid and porous.

Tormos’s approach gives the lamp an almost primitive quality, the geometry is simple, but the proportions and hand-worked surface make it feel deeply considered. The warm, chalky stone sits naturally against darker woods and richly toned interiors, bringing an earthy presence to a room.

Finished with a newly sourced lampshade, the piece balances its sculptural base with a tailored silhouette above. Turned on, the shade softens the weight of the limestone, while unlit, the lamp reads as a small-scale stone sculpture.

About Albert Tormos
Albert Tormos (1927 - 1982) was a French artist and designer known for sculptural lamps carved from solid stone sourced from the Luberon region of Provence. His work highlights the natural character of the material, allowing variations in texture, color, and form to become an integral part of each piece. Combining the weight and permanence of stone with the warmth of light, Tormos created lighting that sits between functional object and sculpture.
