French Mirrored Chest of Drawers, 1940s
This French mirrored chest of drawers, dating to the early 1930s to late 1940s, embodies a distinctly Parisian sensibility, refined yet intimate, and expressed through proportion, material, and detail. Tall and narrow in scale, it carries the presence of a bijoux piece, something designed not to dominate a room, but to punctuate it with light and reflection.
Clad entirely in mirrored glass, the surface is softened by time. The silvering has gently aged, creating a delicate haze beneath the glass, subtle variations that lend depth and atmosphere rather than uniform shine.
Each panel is beveled, catching and refracting light along its edges, giving the piece a luminosity that shifts throughout the day.
The form is lifted on slender cabriole-style legs, their curvature introducing a sense of movement and lightness that contrasts with the rectilinear body above. This gentle arc grounds the piece in classical French tradition, while the mirrored exterior keeps it firmly within a more modern, decorative language. Original lucite pulls, fitted with verdigris-touched brass, add another layer of nuance, cool, translucent surfaces meeting the warmth of aged metal.
There is a sense of restraint in its composition, but also of intimacy. It feels at home in a Paris apartment interior, where scale is considered and every object carries both function and presence. Time has not diminished it; rather, it has given the dresser its character, softened, reflective, and evocative.
