French Oak + Ceramic Sideboard by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, 1960s
Material warmth and graphic clarity come together in this French sideboard by Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, created in the 1960s. It is a piece that balances structure and ornament with confidence, where craftsmanship is both visible and purposeful.
The form is grounded in solid oak, its surface carved to reveal a soft, rhythmic grain. The lines are generous but controlled, giving the cabinet a sense of weight without heaviness. Edges are gently rounded, corners resolved with care, each gesture reinforcing the material’s natural warmth.
Set within this framework, bands of ceramic introduce a colorful counterpoint. The inlay, composed of polychrome earthenware tiles by Boleslaw Danikowski, runs across the top and continues in measured accents along the façade. Their coloration, a vivid hue of turquoise and deeper mineral tones, carries a graphic energy that enlivens the oak without overwhelming it.
The tiles themselves hold variation: subtle shifts in glaze, tonal depth, and surface texture create a sense of movement across what might otherwise be a fixed grid. This interplay between the worked ceramic and the carved wood defines the piece, not as contrast alone, but as dialogue.
Functionally, the sideboard is as considered as it is expressive. Behind its façade, storage is arranged with clarity, three rows of shelving to both the left and right compartments, while the central section offers two rows concealed behind sliding doors. The movement of these panels is smooth and unobtrusive, allowing access without interrupting the overall composition.
This approach reflects the ethos of Guillerme et Chambron’s work, where utility and form are never separate concerns. Their collaboration with Votre Maison often explored the integration of artisanal elements into structured furniture, and here, that philosophy is fully realized. Danikowski’s ceramics do not sit on the piece; they are integral to it.
What emerges is a sideboard that feels both architectural and expressive. The oak provides continuity and calm; the ceramic introduces rhythm and light. Together, they create an object that holds presence without excess, functional, tactile, and animated by the meeting of materials.
Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron, both trained at the École Boulle, created work grounded in authenticity, balance, and craft—now synonymous with French 20th-century design.
